SpyBot is well known and useful tool for removing unwanted spyware and malware from your computer. While the software is nice, it may be hard to uninstall on Windows 10.
I’m normally not a big fan of anti- spyware/malware/virus software as they tend to do more harm than good in many cases, but I’ve been quite fond of SpyBot through the years. Just recently I
had some issues with random popups on a Windows 10 client and wanted to do a spyware/malware search using SpyBot. The install was straightforward as usual, but removing it afterwards wasn’t as easy…
After uninstalling SpyBot using Add or remove programs in the control panel, I noticed that it tried to re-install itself after every boot. Even after removing the SpyBot folder from C:\Program Files (x86)\ , C:\Program Files\ and C:\ProgramData\ it still wasn’t enough to get rid of it.
After looking through the registry I found the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\SpybotPostWindows10UpgradeReInstall.
Once I removed that registry key the issue was gone.
Why SpyBot has added this and why they called the file Test.exe is beyond me.
